Samsung finally unveiled its artificial intelligent assistant, Bixby. This AI assistant, Samsung’s Bixby, comes as a competitor to Apple’s artificially intelligent virtual assistant Siri and Microsoft’s Cortana but most importantly it will go head on with Google’s virtual assistant. The internet had been abuzz with the rumors regarding this virtual assistant for quite some time now. Samsung itself had been teasing people about the unveiling of the virtual assistant and now finally the news has been confirmed. Bixby will be the name of Samsung’s virtual assistant.
The news broke out on Samsung’s Italian website and took the tech news websites with a storm. Bixby will feature in the upcoming Samsung Galaxy 8 mobile which will be launched on the 29th of March 2017. It is claimed to be more efficient and advanced than Siri or Cortana. It was speculated earlier that the virtual assistant will come in both male and female voices with the male one being termed as Bixby and female named as Kresta. The news about the female AI virtual assistant has not been confirmed yet but as far as Bixby is concerned now we are sure to meet him the next week.
What is Samsung’s Bixby capable of?
So what is the big deal about Samsung’s Bixby, what is it capable of? According to what we have gathered it there are three areas where Bixby will have command. Completeness, context awareness, and cognitive tolerance.
It means the when you are working on an app and are stuck at some place, the context awareness will make Bixby jump up to your help. In this way we can easily understand the new features. The cognitive tolerance make it possible that Samsung’s Bixby understand incomplete commands too. There is no need to repeat the exact words for Bixby to understand what you are saying. As he is cognitively intelligent he will be able to make out the meaning behind what you want to be done.
However the most intelligent feature of Bixby is that it can be integrated with Apps. Once integrated all the functions in the app that required touch could be done by voice commands using Bixby.
There will be a dedicated Bixby button on the side of the new Samsung galaxy S8, which is the only additional hardware requirement for Bixby.
Here is what Samsung’s vice president has to say about the AI assistant on his official blog
“Samsung has a conceptually new philosophy to the problem: instead of humans learning how the machine interacts with the world (a reflection of the abilities of designers), it is the machine that needs to learn and adapt to us. The interface must be natural and intuitive enough to flatten the learning curve regardless of the number of functions being added. With this new approach, Samsung has employed artificial intelligence, reinforcing deep learning concepts to the core of our user interface designs. Bixby is the ongoing result of this effort.”
Now that we know that Bixby will be a part of Samsung galaxy S8 we are much more excited about its release.
