If there is a remote chance of something being exploited, it will be exploited. Facebook Profile Picture Shield

The safety of the Facebook profile picture has always been something of a concern as there was no way people could stop others from viewing their profile picture and downloading it. once the picture has been downloaded it can be edited though the sophisticated picture editing software and put to malicious uses.

So in order to stop this practice Facebook has decided to launch the Facebook Profile picture shield. Reportedly this shield will put overlays on the picture thus deterring people from downloading it and manipulating with it.

According to a detailed Facebook post by Aarati Soman, Product Manager at Facebook, following are the important features of this shield.

  • “Other people will no longer be able to download, share or send your profile picture in a message on Facebook
  • People you’re not friends with on Facebook won’t be able to tag anyone, including themselves, in your profile picture
  • Where possible, we’ll prevent others from taking a screenshot of your profile picture on Facebook, which is currently available only on Android devices
  • We’ll display a blue border and shield around your profile picture as a visual cue of protection”

The shield will be rolled out in India first as the beta test, and soon there will be the world wide roll out of the feature too. So soon you will see this option enabled on your Facebook.
